On 28th March, I was privileged to attend The Selly Park Singers’ Spring Concert. As usual, this was a superbly planned programme arranged by musical director, Paul Carr. The clever title, “To the Moon…and Bach” said it all: a combination of choral classics interwoven with more modern songs, mostly to do with the moon. The choir was excellently accompanied by their faithful pianist, Richard Price, and this year we were treated to Lynn Davies playing a clever crossover of Bach and jazz whilst the singers took a well-earned break.
As usual, this was a superbly planned programme … All-in-all, a thoroughly entertaining afternoon

I really enjoyed listening to the combination of classical numbers with the twentieth century classics and it was apparent that the choir did too. Classical highlights for me were, naturally, the Bach pieces but also Mozart’s “Ave verum corpus” and the sumptuous “The Heavens are Telling” from Haydn’s “The Creation”. However, my musical heart lies in the middle of the last century so the Cole Porter tribute, “Let’s Fall in Love”, “Moon River” and (my all-time favourite), “The Rhythm of Life” did it for me! Whilst I will always love Frank, Ella and Sammy, these choral versions were a delight and I particularly enjoyed the changes in mood during the Cole Porter tribute.
All-in-all, a thoroughly entertaining afternoon and very much worth the drive from Surrey to Brum and Bach! I look forward to the Selly Park singers’ next concert in December!
